CCMA Annual Cleaning Bee

It was that time of the year again, the cleaning bee. A once-a-year occasion where our church comes together to show attention to and care for the church garden.

Thanks to our absence during the COVID-19 isolation period, the church property had become completely overrun by weeds. But we were prepared.

Everyone geared up with sunscreen, gloves, tools and in Tammy’s case, a hat. We were herded into our relevant teams, and moved out to our designated areas - ready to face the persistent and resilient weeds. Despite our previous efforts to kill them with with tarp and rubble, the weeds had pushed through. In fact, they had become  taller than most of us.

Everyone did their part in helping to garden. The weeds were piled and shoved into large rubbish bags and bins (some had to be physically jumped on in order to squash them in) and the front, back and side of the church were left looking very well manicured.

I doubt we’ve made the weeds think twice about coming back again though.

The lead up to the cleaning bee is generally full of dread and loathing, but once we get started, there is a great sense of unity and community spirit.

The church leadership are incredibly grateful that everyone was so willing to help out, and thank God for everyone’s ability to bend over and ‘asian-squat’ for a couple of hours every cleaning bee.
